The 16th China Youth League National Congress opens today in Beijing with a call on members to continue to take part in relief efforts in the earthquake areas.
The youth league has always been considered a power base for future Party leaders and each congress is usually attended by senior Party leaders.
The four-day congress will be given a report on the 15th Chinese Youth League Central Committee, it will revise the league's constitution, and elect a new Central Committee.
"You are going to see some new and younger faces on the committee," Li Jiahua, vice-president of the China Youth University of Politics Sciences in Beijing, said.
Lu Hao, 41, former deputy mayor of Beijing, was appointed the first secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Youth League of China last month.
Liao Xuemei, secretary of the Communist Youth League Committee of Mianyang city, Sichuan province, said her attendance at the congress represents the "fearless and selfless contribution" of young volunteers in the quake areas in her province.
"We are confident we can win this battle against the disaster and rebuild our homes," she said.
Liao was selected as a member of the Sichuan province delegation because of her immediate organization and mobilization of relief aid to people in Beichuan county, one of the hardest hit areas in the quake last month.
She created the "red ribbon" volunteer team by mobilizing taxis and private cars to transport the injured.
She also helped set up temporary homes, and activity rooms for children at various camps.
One of the more prominent roles the league has played in the past five years is strengthening the country's economy, and improving public services through volunteer work, Li said.
The Youth League has sent volunteers to the remote western areas of the country, and to developing countries such as Laos and Ethiopia.
They serve as a vital group in helping the disadvantaged.
They are also dedicated to making the Olympic Games in August a success
The nation's biggest volunteer organization, the Chinese Young Volunteers Association, is a unit of the league.
The league attributes its success to long-established credibility and extensive network nationwide, Li said.
Its guidance and influence in colleges and high schools are a boon to students and it is responsible for their participation in disaster relief and reconstruction in the quake-hit areas, Li said.
