African Union (AU) Commission Chairperson Jean Ping on Wednesday expressed satisfaction with the smooth conduct of the first round of the presidential election on Sunday in the Comoros autonomous island of Anjouan.

In a statement, Ping said he welcomed the calm and discipline which characterized the election.

He also congratulated the candidates and the Anjouan people in general for their maturity during the entire period of the election campaign.

Ping commended bilateral and multilateral partners for the support extended to the Comorian authorities for the conduct and the financing of the first round, and appealed to them to continue to support the electoral process until its successful completion.

He reiterated the commitment of the AU to providing support to the ongoing process.

The Comoros isle of Anjouan went to the polls on Sunday to elect a new president, three months after rebel leader Mohamed Bacar was ousted by an AU-backed military force.

A second round of voting is scheduled for June 29 on Anjouan, .

The Comoros has been plagued by political instability since winning independence from France in 1975 with some 19 coups or attempted coups.
