When the deadly earthquake struck on May 12, Li Xinglin, a 35-year-old police officer in Sichuan province, was sorting documents in his office on the second floor of a seven-story building.

The force of the earthquake caused the building to shake, and he tumbled toward the wall, injuring his waist.

But when he saw that eight houses had collapsed outside his building, he sprung to action - realizing that he had a job to do. He even forgot the pain of his own injuries.

Soon Li, along with other officers on his team, were on the scene, braving aftershocks, evacuating schools, and rescuing people trapped beneath debris. They worked around the clock for several days.

It was only on the fourth day after the earthquake that Li learned his own parents were missing. They were later found alive in their hometown, in Jingyuan township.

"Heavy work made me forget my 35th birthday," he said, "and the pain of my waist."

Although he is now receiving medical treatment for his injuries, Li continues his work, including directing the distribution of relief supplies brought to the region by truck.

"Sometimes he moves the materials himself," Liu Jianping, a police fellow office, said.
