President Hu Jintao and his Greek counterpart Karolos Papoulias last night attended the opening show of the "Meet in Beijing 2008 Arts Festival", whose theme this year incorporates the Olympic Games.
Papoulias, who is on a four-day visit, said the Games is a grand gathering that promotes peace, development and friendship in the world.
Greece has been closely watching and praising Chinese preparatory efforts, and it was the country's belief the Beijing Games will be successful, he said.
Greece, being the origin of the Games, opposed all efforts to politicize it. The perpetuation of the Olympic spirit must continue, Papoulias said.
President Hu said the Chinese government and people will implement their commitment to the international community and make the Beijing Games a great success.
It is believed that Hu accompanying Papoulias to last evening's performance was an indication of China's respect for the previous host of the Olympics as well as the importance it attaches to the Games.
Before to the show, the two presidents held talks to push forward the bilateral and strategic partnership.
"Greece will enhance friendship and trust with China, expand cooperation in such areas as trade, ocean shipping, tourism, culture and education, and increase personnel exchanges in hi-tech areas so as to bring more interest for the two peoples," Papoulias said.
The two sides agreed to adjust and optimize the trade structure and enhance mutual investment and cooperation in the fields of maritime transportation, small- and medium- sized companies, tourism, culture and education.
The two presidents also witnessed the signing of three agreements dealing with cooperation on legal affairs, and the establishment of Confucius schools in Greece.
The Greek president is scheduled to meet with top legislator Wu Bangguo and Premier Wen Jiabao today, and visit the Beijing National Stadium on Wednesday, before flying to Shanghai.
