According to China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (CAAM) statistics, China's total automobile production and sales both exceeded 5 million in the first half of 2008, up 16.71 percent and 18.52 percent over the same period last year.
According to the analysis, automobile production and sales in the first half of year were characterized by the following: commercial vehicles performed better overall than passenger cars; there was a significant downturn in the growth rate of compact cars; the overall performance of multi-purpose passenger vehicles (MPV) was depressing; and independent brands continue to occupy a higher pecentage. The market demand of the sports utility vehicle (SUV) still maintained rapid growth, and the City SUV's market performance remained excellent. The overall market demand of commercial vehicles maintained steady growth; the growth of heavy-duty trucks was outstanding; the market demand for passenger cars smoothed out; and oversize passenger cars by more than 12 meters continue to maintain rapid growth.
