Shuangyashan, one of the important coal and agricultural cities in northeast China's Heilongjiang province, aims to develop into a core city in the province's eastern coal and electricity belt.
"One of the key tasks for us is to turn our abundant natural resources into full and real use by introducing a large number of cooperative projects," said Tang Xikui, Party chief of the city.
City leaders said they will spare no effort to develop Shuangyashan into the largest coal and electricity production center in Heilongjiang.
"We will push development of a series of coal and electricity projects in the coming years," Tang said.
According to Tang, the city will realize a coal production capacity of 40 million tons and electricity output of 5 million kW by the end of the 11th Five-Year Plan period (2006-10), becoming the largest production center of coal and electricity in the province.
The city will also accelerate extension of the coal chemical industrial chain, according to Tang.
A number of coal chemical projects have started construction in the city. By the end of the 11th Five-Year Plan period, the annual coal chemical production capacity is expected to reach 3 million tons.
Shuangyashan also wants to further develop the local iron and steel industry, Tang said.
"As Heilongjiang neighbors Russia, we plan to sign more agreements from there in an effort to build the city into the largest iron and steel producer in the province," Tang said.
According to Tang, the iron and steel output in Shuangyashan is expected to reach 2 million tons by the end of 2010.
Agriculture and stockbreeding are also listed as key sectors of the local economy.
"We will encourage local firms to develop a number of new agriculture and stockbreeding projects to better meet the market demand," Tang said.
By 2010, the city's output of finished agriculture and livestock goods is expected to reach 8 million tons.
