The resettlement plan for Tibetan herders in Sichuan province was officially launched recently. According to this plan, Sichuan will invest 5 billion yuan in the next four years to carry out the building of pastoral new villages in Sichuan's Tibetan pastoral areas, to help 473,000 herdsmen bid farewell to the traditional nomadic way of life and to "let every family has a regular room, every household has a new tent and every village has activity center."

The production and living conditions for people of all ethnic groups in Sichuan's Tibetan areas have improved since 2007. But among the 533,000 herdsmen in Sichuan province, 219,000 are still not settled and 254,000 only have crude shelter. Sichuan Provincial Party Committee and Sichuan Provincial Government decided to focus on the implementation of herdsmen's resettlement plan and strive to let all Sichuan province's herdsmen settle down in 2012.
