VION Food Group, an international food company based in the Netherlands, is stepping up its efforts to expand globally.

With the European Commission approving VION's acquisition of Grampian Country Food Group, one of the leading food companies in the United Kingdom, in late July, the Netherlands-based company has been in the spotlight.

China is also an important growth market for VION, according to Peter Beckers, chief strategic officer of the company.

VION now has two joint ventures in China - Rousselot and Sonac.

With more than 35,000 staff members worldwide and an annual turnover of approximately 9.6 billion euros ($12.9 billion), VION ranks among the Netherlands' leading industrial companies.

The group's activities are carried out in four divisions:

VION Ingredients develops, produces and markets ingredients from natural raw materials for pharmaceutical, food and technical applications for people and livestock;

VION Fresh Meat operates in the efficient, hygienic and high-quality production of fresh pork, beef and lamb;

VION Convenience focuses on the development, production and marketing of meat-based convenience foods as well as other foods such as fish, vegetables and vegetarian products;

VION UK is the division specifically structured for the development, production and sales of food products in and from the United Kingdom.

In addition, Banner, a separate business unit, is prominent in the development and production of non-gelatin based products for the pharmaceutical, food supplement and cosmetics industries.

VION wishes to fulfill the needs and requirements of consumers with high-quality food and ingredients made from natural materials of an agricultural origin.

VION has a long-term vision, a strategy and corporate objectives that enable broader social objectives to be incorporated in its decision-making. VION is focused on the requirements of the international community. This includes products, product processes and social aspects such as the care of people, animals and the environment.

VION's strategy rests on three key pillars: product leadership, operational excellence and sustainability.

Product leadership forms an inseparable element of the strategy. Consumer preferences are directed increasingly toward products that combine convenience, enjoyment and health. VION has been from the outset very well placed to fulfill these wishes. Innovation and marketing are well structured and VION's policy is directed at further strengthening these competencies and activities.

Operational excellence is a factor for strategic success in highly competitive markets where there is little to differentiate the basic products. In these situations the bidder with the lowest cost structure will be the best placed. Accordingly, cost control and efficiency improvement also form a permanent component of corporate policy.

Sustainability is rooted in VION's strategy. VION appreciates its social responsibilities for sustainable business operations. It has set itself the target of achieving the optimum balance between economic and social interests, as well as the interests of its employees.

VION pays a great deal of attention in its operational management to sustainability aspects, such as the use of natural resources and the environment, the respectful treatment of animals and a high level of food safety. It is VION's philosophy to create win-win situations by offering its stakeholders a sustainable and performance-oriented future with a clear business focus.
