The Commerce Chamber of Jinbao Street will officially begin operation at the end of 2008 after it was approved by the Beijing municipal government on April 27, 2007, becoming the first chamber of commerce in the capital city established for a single street.
According to Chairman Chiu Yung, the Commerce Chamber of Jinbao Street will assist its members as a social hub and a local commercial network.
Members consist of enterprises located on Jinbao Street, the number of which is now nearly 100.
The chamber will also advance communications between its members and the government.
"The enterprises have its limitations when processing administrative issues, while the chamber can help them to overcome the limits," Chiu said. For example, when a US investment company plans to locate on Jinbao Street, the commerce chamber offers help to complete the approval procedures.
As well, the chamber facilitates communication with other world-famous commercial streets as it strives to build itself into a global commercial street comparable to Champs-Elysees in Paris and 5th Avenue in New York. Although Jinbao Street plans on spreading the ideal of a luxury lifestyle through the introduction of renowned international brands, Chiu acknowledges the challenge of preserving and spreading traditional Chinese culture and brands abroad.
"To protect traditions doesn't mean to keep it as it was. Take the siheyuan - traditional Chinese courtyard - for example. It is not proper to just dismantle them. Repair and repositioning for proper use are also needed," says Chiu.
In Lot No 7 of Jinbao Street, the design of the Hong Kong Jockey Club Beijing Clubhouse has adopted the concept of the traditional siheyuan of Beijing. Other modern stores have been built into design, which brings new life to traditions.
Jinbao Street has also introduced famous Chinese brands to foreigners such as Wuyutai Teahouse, which dates back to 1887.
In addition to serving as Chamber Chairman, Chiu is also the president of Fu Wah International Group, the developer of the street. Chiu believes that Jinbao Street will not only be a successful commercial project of Fu Wah Group, but also a lasting legacy left to the next generation of Beijing.
"I feel great social responsibilities on my shoulders," Chiu says.
As a result, professional worldwide consulting institutions like CB Richard Ellis and Jones Lang Lasalle were invited to offer professional services for Jinbao Street. The latest designs, energy-saving materials and human-oriented facilities have been applied in the street.
"Although these measures may slow down the speed of development, I hope every project in Jinbao Street is a masterpiece in its business," Chiu said.
