A man and a woman have been detained for separate assaults on police officers, the city's police bureau said yesterday.

On Friday, a woman surnamed Chen was arrested for attacking Li Jun, an officer with the Putuo sub-bureau, after he stopped the car in which she was traveling for driving on the wrong side of Tongchuan Road.

As Li was speaking with the driver of the vehicle, Chen snatched a document from the officer's hand and scratched his face, police said.

She then got out of the car and began punching and kicking him.

Li called for backup and the woman was restrained and then arrested, they said.

In a separate incident, on Nov 3, the owner of a motorized tricycle surnamed Feng attacked Qian Yong, an officer with the Songjiang substation, after he was issued with two tickets for failing to have proper insurance and for parking in a restricted area.

Feng beat Qian repeatedly with his fists and helmet, knocking him unconscious, police said.

The assailant was later caught and arrested.

The latest assaults reflect a growing trend of violence against police officers, the Shanghai bureau said yesterday.
