Over 70 scientists and scholars from China and Europe met in Beijing on Monday to discuss the changes in regional and global water resources caused by global climate change, and its impact on the sustainable development of human society.
The international seminar on "Climate Change and Global Water Circulation", held at the Institute of Atmospheric Physics in the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), Beijing, is jointly sponsored by The Research Councils UK (RCUK), the Monsoon Asia Integrated Regional Study (MAIRS) and the EU Water Circulation and Climate Change Project.
The seminar aims at strengthening cooperation between Chinese and European scientists and to further the exchange of the latest findings in research on the relationship between climate change and water resources.
Chris Godwin, director of the RCUK China Office, said: "Over the past ten years, China has quickly risen to become a major player in scientific research, and its cooperation with the UK has also developed very quickly. Although Britain has already become China's largest partner in scientific research in Europe, there is still huge potential for furthering the partnership, and it needs to be continuously strengthened in the future."
Fu Congbin, an academician at the CAS, said that global climate change research needs extensive international cooperation to increase the efficiency and influence scientific findings have on society.
During this three day seminar, scientists and scholars will hold exchanges on topics including water resources and land cover conditions, regional climate and the water cycle, flooding and drought, water resource management and agricultural development.
MAIRS is the first research project on global climate change initiated by Chinese scientists, focusing on the study of the relationship between the water cycle and climate change in Asia.
