Futian district in downtown Shenzhen covers 78 sq km, about 4 percent of the entire city. The 413-hectare Shenzhen CBD is located in central Futian.

The permanent population in Futian was about 1.2 million by the end of 2007, or 14 percent of the city's total. There are two border checkpoints in the district connecting with Hong Kong. About 110,000 companies, including 102 of the world top 500 corporations, have operations in the district.

Futian's GDP was nearly 109 billion yuan in the first three quarters of this year, up 10 percent from a year earlier, with output for the entire year expected to reach about 149 billion yuan.

In 2000, the district's GDP was about 50 billion yuan, which more than doubled by 2005.

Every sq km land in Futian now generates 1.4 billion yuan in GDP, nearly five times the city average.

Its economy has maintained double-digit growth over the past nine years, reaching a high of 16.5 percent in 2003.

Service industries now contribute about 83 percent to local GDP with manufacturing-oriented services accounting for 72 percent of that.

Its main industries include finance, logistics, Internet information, service outsourcing, creative design, exhibitions and international business.

Its finance industry contributed about 33 percent to the district's GDP and accounted for nearly half of the city's total in the sector.

Taxes from the district hit 20 billion yuan in 2006 after reaching 10 billion in 2002 from 6.4 billion yuan in 2000. They are projected to surpass 40 billion yuan this year, according to official figures.

During the area's industrial restructuring a group of companies with outdated technologies, high energy consumption and heavy pollutants were closed. As a result, water consumed in generating each 10,000 yuan of GDP dropped nearly 30 percent from 16.5 tons in 2005 to 11.6 tons, while power consumption decreased by 26.3 percent from 2005 to 2008.
