Xinjiang is putting all its resources into creating the largest wind power industrial base in China. Construction got underway recently on a wind power project with an installed capacity of 200,000 kilowatts at Alataw Pass. In 2007 alone, the installed capacity of wind power projects under construction in Xinjiang reached 290,000 kilowatts.

With total reserves of more than 800 million kilowatts, wind energy resources in Xinjiang account for nearly 40% of China's total wind energy resources. Nine major wind areas, including Dabancheng, Xiaocaohu and Tacheng Laofengkou, have a total area of around 150,000 square meters available for wind power development and utilization, and a total installation capacity of over 80 million kilowatts.
