Asia's first offshore wind-driven generator was recently completely installed. A "giant windmill" over 90 meters tall already stands tall in China's East China Sea, according to the Shanghai Investigation, Design & Research Institute.
Reporters learned that Shanghai's East China Sea Bridge wind power farm currently under construction is the first offshore wind power farm in Asia. Composed of 34 "giant windmills," it will achieve grid-connected power generation prior to the 2010 World Expo in Shanghai. The wind farm, with a total installed capacity of 100 megawatts, will fully meet the electricity needs of 100,000 families. Every year it will reduce carbon dioxide emissions equal to the amount produced by 50,000 cars.
The construction of the East China Sea Bridge wind farm project went underway in September 2008. The installed capacity of each power generator in the wind farm will be 3 megawatts, making them the wind-driven generators with the largest single-unit installed capacity in China. The main body of the turbine weighs over 400 tons and is over 90 meters tall. The blades of the "windmill" are 45 meters long.
According to the construction schedule, the first wind-driven generator of the East China Sea Bridge wind farm was completely installed in late March this year. The main body with a height of over 90 meters now already stands tall in the East China Sea. Lu Zhongmin said, in early April this year, two other generators will also be completely installed. After that, these three generators will shoulder the task of early-stage testing. Prior to the Shanghai World Expo on May 1, 2010, all 34 generators will be completely installed and realize grid-connected power generation.
The East China Sea Bridge wind farm is located in the East China Sea, offshore Shanghai and to the east of the East China Sea Bridge linking Shanghai's Nanhui District with the Yangshan Port. It covers a sea area of 14 square kilometers, with the shortest distance to the coastline being 8 kilometers and the furthest distance being 14 kilometers. In this sea area, the 34 "giant windmills" will stand orderly, with a north-to-south separation distance of 1 kilometer and an east-to-west separation distance of 500 meters.
With a total investment of more than 2.3 billion yuan, the East China Sea Bridge wind farm's construction cost per kilowatt is more than 23,000 yuan. Lu said, although the wind farm requires a high one-time cost, it will basically not consume any energy after completion, realizing clean power generation. The generators have a designed life expectancy of 25 years. Considering their total service life, their costs are relatively low.
