The Education Bureau under the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region said it is necessary to increase enrollment of excellent non-local students in order to develop education into a pillar industry in Hong Kong, with a total of 3,000 new students to be enrolled each year.
Each year, Hong Kong's universities have enrolled 1,500 students from Chinese mainland and other countries for bachelor's degree programs, of which majors such as business administration are very popular among non-local students.
An official from the Education Bureau said that it is necessary to double enrollment of non-local students and increase their proportion to 20 percent of the total number of students. The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region will adopt measures to attract graduates with excellent talents to stay and work in Hong Kong, so as to enhance Hong Kong's competitiveness. If the student accommodation issue is properly solved, the increase of enrollment will not raise marginal costs.
