Reporters learned from the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region Coalfield Geology Bureau that February this year the Xinjiang Coalfield Geology Bureau's prospecting Team 156 fully launched a prospecting project for coal resources in the area from the Yila Lake to the Aydingkol Lake in the Turpan region, Xinjiang Province. By the end of March, after a total of 17 drill holes had been designed and dug, a coalfield around 16 kilometers long from east to west, 10 kilometers wide from south to north, and 10 to 22 meters deep was discovered. According to preliminary estimates, the coal reserve is more than 3 billion tons.
According to geological samples acquired at present, it is predicted that areas around the Aydingkol Lake are likely to contain other coal resources. After the coal resources prospecting project covering the area from the Yila Lake to the Aydingkol Lake is fully completed, it is expected that more than 27 billion tons of coal resources will be discovered, and one or two large-scale coal producing areas will be established.
According to the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region Bureau of Surveying and Mapping, the Aydingkol Lake, 30 kilometers southeast of Turpan, Xinjiang Province, is a saltwater lake. The maximum surface area of the lake covers 100 square kilometers. Deserts and saline-alkaline soils are found around the lake. The latest 2008 survey data shows that it is China's lowest inland point at 154.31 meters below the sea level lies in the lake.
