Construction work on the country's first citywide express rail will begin in Shanghai by the end of this year, local authorities announced yesterday.

The southern extension of line 11 will connect Longyang Road Station, where one might change to Maglev train, going to Shanghai Pudong International Airport or take Metro line 2 to downtown, and Lingang New District, according to the Shanghai Railway Transportation Construction Headquarter.

The extension will be nearly 60-km long with 11 stations. Trains will run at a maximum speed of 120 km per hour.

"The citywide express rail is faster than any existing Metro line, with a maximum speed of 80 km per hour," Bi Xiangli, CEO of Shanghai Shentong Metro Research & Consultancy Co Ltd, told China Daily yesterday.

"The distance between stops is about 6 km on an average, the longest being 10 km."

The extension is expected to boost the development of Lingang New District, connected to Yangshan Deepwater Port by Donghai Bridge.
