The "International Ministerial Conference on Nuclear Energy in the 21st Century" opened on the morning of April 20 in Beijing. Reporters learned from a news conference at this meeting that 24 nuclear power units are currently under construction in China, and that they are mainly spread out over coastal provinces.
At the news conference, Dong Baotong, Director of the System Engineering Department of China Atomic Energy Authority, said that presently, China has 11 nuclear power units in operation, with a combined power generating capacity of 9.1 million kilowatts. He said there are 24 nuclear power unit projects under construction with a combined power generating capacity of over 25 million kilowatts. According to the current plan, the power generating capacity of China's nuclear power units in operation by 2020 will be more than 40 million kilowatts.
According to Dong, most of the 24 nuclear power generation units currently under construction are located in coastal areas, including two power generation units of the Qinshan Nuclear Power Phase II extension project, two power generation units of the Fangjiashan nuclear power project, two power generation units in Guangdong Daya Bay Nuclear Power Plant, four one-million-kilowatt nuclear power generation units currently under construction in Liaoning Province, and six power generation units in Ningde and Fuqing, Fujian Province.
From April 20 to 22, the International Ministerial Conference on Nuclear Energy in the 21st Century will be held at the Beijing International Convention Center. 330 representatives from 66 countries including China, the US, Russia, France and Japan, as well as 7 international organizations such as the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), will attend the conference.
