Gu Xiulian, president of the All-China Women's Federation met with Moscow Mayor Yuri Luzhkov in Moscow on Tuesday. The two sides discussed the two countries' social development, especially in women and children sphere.

Gu, also vice chairwoman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress, China's top legislative body, hailed the China-Russia relations and the ongoing "Year of China" theme events in Russia.

"We should take these opportunities to push forward our friendly cooperative ties in politics, economy, culture and socialfields. In that view, the exchange and cooperation between women and families in we two countries will play a great role," Gu said.

She and Luzhkov introduced each country's laws and regulations and reforms progress in protecting and developing the rights of women and children, as well as in healthcare, education and finance assistance for mothers.

Gu is heading a Chinese delegation for the fourth China-Russia Women's Culture Week, slated from July 2 to 8 in Moscow.

Early on Tuesday, Gu and her Russian counterpart Svetlana Orlova visited an exhibition of folk handicrafts made by Chinese and Russian women artists, as part of the theme week.
