Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Qin Gang said in Beijing Thursday China bolsters those measures taken by the Pakistani government to maintain its stability. Qin's comment came in response to the exchange of fire between religious students of hard-line Lal Masjid, or Red Mosque, and law enforcers in Islamabad on Tuesday. "As a friendly neighbour of Pakistan, China backs Pakistan's measures to safeguard social stability and economic development," Qin told a regular press conference. Firing broke out between Lal Masjid personnel and law enforcers Tuesday noon after a group of 100 religious students of the mosque encircled some policemen deployed nearby and snatched arms from them. A total of 1,200 male and female religious students of hard-line Lal Masjid, or Red Mosque, surrendered to Pakistani authorities till Wednesday in the capital city.
