Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Qin Gang Thursday responded to Australia's defense policy paper, saying Australian leaders have time and again expressed appreciation of China's foreign and defense policies. A new defense policy paper launched by Australian Prime Minister John Howard on Thursday said China's military modernization, particularly development of new and disruptive capabilities such as the anti-satellite missile, could create misunderstandings and instability in the region. China pursues a national defense policy that is defensive in nature, and firmly adheres to peaceful development, Qin told a regular press conference. Australian leaders have spoken positively of China's foreign and defense policies during their contacts with Chinese counterparts, said Qin."A country's foreign policy should accord with its defense policy paper." Qin said China-Australia relations are developing well and the two sides have maintained constant high-level contacts, conducting cooperation and dialogue in various fields. The two countries have also decided to develop all-round cooperative relationship oriented toward the 21st century. "We would like to make efforts with Australia to push forward the continued, steady and healthy development of bilateral ties," the spokesman said.
