Chinese Vice Premier Hui Liangyu on Thursday called on local governments to fight drought and flooding as well as to work harder to help farmers with the autumn harvest.
Hui, also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, made the call during his inspection tour of northeast China, a major grain and animal husbandry production base.
More substantial efforts were required to further improve China's grain production, increase the income of farmers and ensure market supply, which will consequently provide strong support for the country's economic development, said Hui.
Natural disasters, such as flooding and drought, have seriously threatened China's agricultural production, Hui said.
Hui told local authorities to intensify management of autumn crops, such as rice and corn and strengthen work in fighting flood and drought. He also called for efforts to promote the breeding industry and implement measures to assist farmers in difficulty.
