Togolese president terms China as true friend |

Togolese President Faure Gnassingbe has held discussions with Chinese assistant foreign minister Zhai Jun at the new presidential palace, which was constructed with the help of the Chinese government.
During the meeting that took place Wednesday, Zhai conveyed Chinese President Hu Jintao''s greetings to the Togolese president who in reply expressed gratitude and asked Zhai to convey his message of goodwill to Hu.
With regard to ties between the two countries, the Togolese president expressed his satisfaction and thanked the Chinese government for remaining by the side of Togo during difficult times. According to the president, China was indeed a true friend of Togo.
Speaking further, Gnassingbe affirmed that Togo will continue to enforce the one China policy adding that the policy remained the cornerstone of Togolese diplomacy.
Togo will continue to uphold the policy in the future, said the president who also praised the last China-Africa summit, which was held in Beijing in November 2006, terming it as new model for South-South cooperation.
On his part, Zhai said that since diplomatic ties were established between the two countries 35 years ago, relations between Togo and China had continued to grow unhindered. Zhai added that China appreciated highly Togo''s enforcement of one China policy and support for reunification. Zhai said that the two countries supported one another and largely agreed on international issues.
