However, as he provided evidence which helped with the investigation of other cases, he was given a two-year reprieve. Earlier reports said the evidence provided by Zheng Xiaoyu''s subordinates led to the investigation of their former boss, who was sentenced to death in May at the Beijing Municipal No. 1 Intermediate People''s Court for taking bribes, including cash and gifts, which were worth more than 6.49 million yuan (850,000 U.S. dollars).
But Zheng has asked the court of second instance to reconsider his sentence as the penalty is "too severe".
He first came under investigation by the Communist Party of China''s Central Commission for Discipline Inspection in December 2006 and was expelled from the Party in March 2007. Cao, one of Zheng Xiaoyu''s former secretaries, has been under investigation since January. Hao Heping, also one of Zheng''s former secretaries, was sentenced to 15 years in prison on corruption charges in November last year. The court on Thursday also handed down verdicts for four other officials involved in corruption cases in the drug supervision field. Wang Guorong, former secretary-general of the China Pharmacopoeia Committee, a think-tank composed of medical experts and in charge of setting up standards for drugs, was given life imprisonment for taking bribes.
