Three professional hitmen have been sentenced to death after being found guilty of multiple murders by a court in southwest China's Sichuan Province.

Li Qiang, Zhang Zhiqiang and Yu Yang were hired to kill three people between August 2005 and April 2006, according to Meishan City Intermediate People's Court.

Two people who hired the gang to carry out the killings, Wang Ling and Bian Wei, received suspended death sentences and life imprisonment respectively.

In one case, Li and Zhang were hired in March 2006 by a woman named Wang Ling to kill her partner Yuan Zhong, who Wang complained repeatedly asked her for money. Wang bought a car for them to carry out the killing.

Li shot Yuan dead in the car on April 2 last year after he, and two accomplices Zhang Zhiqiang and Huang Xuwen, tracked Yuan down in Meishan.

Wang paid them 120,000 yuan (15,789 U.S. dollars) for the murder. Li and Zhang then killed their accomplice Huang 25 days later, fearing that he would fail to cover up the murder.

Li, Zhang and another accomplice Yu Yang were also hired to kill two other people in July and December of 2005, according to the court.

Li and Zhang were arrested in May last year. Police recovered four guns and 62 pistols from their apartments.
