The scandal sparked a nationwide outcry and the central government ordered an immediate investigation. Many workers, including teenagers, were forced to work long hours in such kilns without payment and in cruel conditions where they were subject to beatings and injuries.

In June, 359 people, including 12 children, were rescued from illegal brick kilns in Shanxi and police made 38 arrests.
On Wednesday, five people -- kiln boss Wang Bingbing, foreman Heng

Tinghan and employees Zhao Yanbing, Heng Mingyang and Liu Dongsheng -- went on trial in a court in Linfen city over forced labor allegations.
