The Macao police have nabbed 21 illegal imported laborers, local media reported Wednesday.

The Macao Post Daily quoted police sources as saying that a dozen police personnel launched the surprise raid on a downtown hotel on late Tuesday.

The 21 suspects are all holding the Chinese mainland travel document, the sources were cited by the newspaper.

Other five local suspects were also apprehended for alleged role in hiring the illegal workers, the sources were cited.

The employment of illegal workers is a crime that incurs hefty fines and imprisonment in case of repeat offenders. Illegally employed workers are customarily ordered to leave Macao.

Macao's number of illegally imported laborers has been on rise in recent years.
