China, Singapore urged to strengthen economic cooperation |

Visiting Chinese Vice Premier Wu Yi said on Wednesday that the relations between China and Singapore are facing new opportunities for development, and the two countries should strengthen economic cooperation for a bright future. Speaking at a gala lunch hosted by Singapore Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SCCCI), the Chinese vice premier said that Singapore is an important cooperation partner of China and the strengthening and expansion of China-Singapore mutually beneficial cooperation are uniquely endowed. "Further deepening and widening reciprocal cooperation in multiple fields and promoting trade facilitation will not only generate tangible benefits for the two countries and two peoples but also conducive to the stability, development and prosperity of the region," she said.
Wu voiced her satisfaction with the good economic and trade cooperation between the two countries in recent years, saying that bilateral exchanges and cooperation are productive in such areas as science and technology, culture, health, education and quality supervision. The two sides have established a sound investment cooperative relationship in such fields as high-tech, transportation and communication, chemical industry and paper pulp industry, she added.
Singapore is now China''s 7th largest trading partner and China is the 3rd biggest trading partner of Singapore, she said, adding that bilateral trade volume increased by 23.2 percent over the previous year to 40.85 billion U.S. dollars in 2006, by the end of May this year, Singapore has actually invested 31.04 billion U.S. dollars in over 16,000 projects in China and become China''s no. 6 foreign direct investment (FDI) source.
