The Chinese hostage released in Niger arrived safely in the capital city Niamey on Tuesday, where he received a warm welcome from the ambassador and his colleagues.

At the welcoming reception, Ambassador Chen Gonglai expressed his warm greetings to the released hostage, Zhang Guohua, on behalf of the Chinese government, and asked him about his ordeal during the kidnapping.

Representatives from Zhang's firm, a uranium company under the China Nuclear Engineering & Construction (Group) Corporation, and from other Chinese companies in Niger, also extended their greetings to Zhang, expressing their hope he will recover physically and mentally soon.

Zhang thanked all sides for their efforts to rescue him, and said he would go to work soon after a short break to recover.

On July 6, Zhang, deputy general manager of the Societe Des Mines D'Agelik, was taken hostage by the Niger-based rebel group the Movement of Niger People for Justice, in the region of Agadez, some 1,000 km north of the capital.

With news of the kidnapping, the Chinese government and the embassy immediately undertook rescue measures, cooperating closely with the Nigerien government and the International Committee of the Red Cross, and successfully rescued Zhang after nine days of captivity.
