China''s media authorities have launched an unprecedented crackdown on bogus news stories in the wake of the furore over the allegedly fabricated "cardboard dumplings" expose.

The report was produced by a Beijing Television reporter who allegedly instructed four "baozi" -- stuffed dumpling -- cooks to fill their products with chopped waste cardboard.

The Publicity Department of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, the State Administration of Radio, Film and Television and the State Press and Publication Administration has ordered all news organizations or individual journalists who reported or released fake news to publicly apologize and correct the items as soon as possible.

In a circular to all news organizations, the three authorities said those who intentionally fabricated news that caused public anxiety and tarnished the nation''s image would be harshly dealt with or even prosecuted if they broke the law.

Their news organizations would also be penalized.
