Lightning strikes have claimed 403 lives in China so far this year, equivalent to last year's total, the China Meteorological Administration (CMA) said on Friday.
The CMA said China had suffered more frequent and severe lightning storms this year. Statistics showed lightning storms caused 2,525 accidents from January to June, of which 52 involved fires.
Lightning storms caused damage to a number of buildings, electricity supply facilities and electronic devices. The total direct economic losses topped 80 million yuan (10.57 million U.S. dollars), said the CMA.
According to the forecast released by the CMA, lightning is expected on Saturday in many parts of China, including northwestern, central and southwestern regions.
