The China Gezhouba Group Corporation (CGGC) has signed an agreement with the Ethiopian Roads Authority for the construction of the northern Shire-Adi Abune road with over 49.2 million U.S. dollars, the management said Wednesday.
CGGC Deputy General Manager Peng Yuanping confirmed that the 83 km Shire-Adi Abune road has been exhausted due to long years of service and it will be upgraded into an asphalt road.
Construction of the road will be carried out with 47.7 million dollars while the consultancy and supervision activities with 1.5 million dollars, said Peng.
Some 70 percent of the cost for the construction will be obtained on loan from the World Bank while 30 percent will be allocated by the Ethiopian government, he said.
He added an Indian and local consultants will be employed for the consultancy activities.
In addition to alleviating the transportation problem in the area, the road is expected to enhance the growth of tourism industry there, Peng said.
He also said the project will be finalized on schedule.
The Ethiopian government has set a target to construct almost 11,000 km of new federal roads and 5,500 km of new regional roads, while maintaining over 4,000 km of federal and regional roads.
