China has found pesticide residue and excessive sulfur dioxide in fruits imported from Vietnam in the first half of this year, said the top quality control authority in Beijing on Wednesday.

The General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine (AQSIQ) said the local authority of south China's Guangdong Province found 17 tons of dragonfruit in July to contain residue of the pesticides BHC and DDT, the use of which are forbidden in China.

Local authority of south China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region found 213.6 tons of fresh longan contained excessive sulfur dioxide in the first half, and the goods have been returned.

China has informed Vietnam and asked it to investigate into the cases and take effective measures to prevent similar incidents.

The AQSIQ has demanded inspection and quarantine authorities at all levels to strengthen inspection on imported agricultural products, especially for pesticide residue, and said it will return or destroy those containing poisonous substances.
