Industrial and Commercial Bank of China (ICBC) last night denied rumors that its website and trading system were hacked yesterday.

Customers experienced long delays in logging on to their online accounts; and the speed of personal banking transactions at counters and ATMs was also slow.

As customers lined up at bank counters and at ATMs to withdraw or deposit money, rumors spread that the bank had been attacked by hackers.

"Today is the first day of the lower interest tax rate and the ICBC is upgrading its system," the bank said in a notice on its website.

Yesterday was also the day for most companies and institutions to pay pensions and salaries through the banking system; and many were subscribing to funds, which put the system under further stress, the notice said.

All systems returned to normal later in the afternoon and ICBC apologizes for the inconvenience, the notice added.

ICBC, China's largest commercial bank, had more than 2.41 million corporate banking clients and 170 million personal banking customers in 2006.
