China's top political advisor Jia Qinglin on Friday called for closer parliamentary exchanges between China and Austria.

Jia told President of the Austrian Federal Council Wolfgang Erlitz that the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) National Committee, China's top advisory body, is ready to step up exchanges with the Austrian parliament and make joint efforts to promote closer bilateral ties.

With Austria acting as China's important cooperative partner in Europe, the two countries enjoy broad common interests and have similar stances on many international issues, said Jia, chairman of the CPPCC National Committee.

"We are satisfied with the progress of China-Austria ties over the years," Jia told Erlitz, adding the two sides have made great achievements in cooperation in diversified areas such as culture, education, technology and environmental protection.

In response, Erlitz told Jia the Austrian parliament highly values its relations with China and considers China as its most important trade partner in Asia.

He believes the two countries still enjoy great potentials in their cooperation in environmental protection, renewable energy and technology.

Erlitz said he expects to have better understanding and more exchanges with China through his current China tour, vowing to promote even greater progress in bilateral cooperation.

CPPCC National Committee Vice Chairman Xu Kuangdi also met with Erlitz on Friday.

Besides the Chinese capital, Erlitz will visit Guizhou Province and Shanghai City.
