The Chinese government on Tuesday expressed its sympathy for Greece which has been hit by the worst forest fires in 150 years.

"We feel deep sympathy for the casualties, damage and property loss Greece has suffered in the forest fires," said Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Liu Jianchao.

Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao has sent messages to his Greek counterpart Costas Karamanlis, expressing sympathy and condolence. The Red Cross Society of China has provided assistance to Greece, according to Liu.

Chinese government's relevant departments keep exchanges with the Greek side and are ready to provide fire-fighting equipment and personnel assistance.

"We are convinced that Greek government and people will overcome the natural disaster and rebuild their homes," Liu said.

A total of 60 new blazes broke out in the southeast European country on Sunday and the death toll has risen to 63 by Monday morning.

Greece declared a nationwide state of emergency on Saturday as the unprecedented wave of wildfires has ravaged the country, particularly the southern region of Peloponnese.
