SHANGHAI: A fleet of 300 yellow school buses took to the city streets yesterday, as part of efforts to improve safety for schoolchildren at the start of the new semester.
The Shanghai municipal education committee said there are currently about 1,400 buses operating in the city, of which, 300 are owned by schools and the remainder by the local government and private firms.
The current fleet of 300 carries some 6,600 students to school every day.
The committee is recommending all schools adopt the new yellow livery to make the buses instantly recognizable to all road users.
Similar schemes have been introduced in Tianjin, Chengdu and Wuhan.
A further 600 school buses have been registered at the local transportation administration department, of which 370 are painted yellow.
Some 750 drivers of school-owned buses have also completed their professional training.
Wang Xing, a spokeswomen for the Shanghai education commission said a number of buses rented from local transport companies have been given the uniform "school bus" signage, which they are required to display in a prominent position.
Also, the public transportation administration has said all school buses can use the "buses only" lane when carrying students.
A press release from the education commission said the design of the new bus came from a teacher at the Shanghai Business School and was selected after several rounds of voting and discussion by officials, school representatives and parents.
The municipal committee of education also requires all school buses to have a new license issued by the public traffic administrative department.
Parents can refer to the licenses to find out the owner of the bus, its registration details and the routes it takes.
However, due to heavy workloads, the licensing process has not yet been completed, so the education commission said the old licenses will remain valid until September 14.
After that date, buses without a new license and signage will be forbidden from carrying students.
