China's first senior officer for international peacekeeping force left Beijing via New York for his post in Western Sahara.
Major General Zhao Jingmin with China's Ministry of National Defence will start implementing military commander of United Nations Mission for the referendum in Western Sahara after a short stay at the UN headquarter.
The general was appointed the commander, the first Chinese senior officer in UN peacekeeping forces, by UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on August 27.
"The appointment has shown UN's trust to capability of Chinese military officer and appreciation of China's active participation to the peacekeeping mission," the general said before departure in Beijing.
53-year-old Zhao joined Chinese Liberation Army in 1970 and was appointed U.N. military observer for twice and was an officer in charge of peacekeeping affairs in the ministry.
