Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) government Secretary for Labor and Welfare Matthew Cheung said on Thursday the settlement of the bar-benders' labor dispute is a hard-won compromise for all concerned but the result was a win-win situation for all.
"I believe the bar-bending workers' strike will not trigger industrial action in other sectors," Cheung said, "The dispute is an isolated incident."
Cheung made the remarks when asked about the bar-benders' labor dispute which ended late Wednesday night after month-long standstill.
He told reporters here Thursday labor relations in Hong Kong are generally good and strikes are "uncommon," describing the bar- benders' strike as "complex and protracted."
The bar-bending workers'strike for higher pay and shorter working hours finally ended after 36 days as they struck an agreement with employers after a five-hour meeting late Wednesday night.
Under the settlement, steel fixers will work eight hours a day for a daily salary of 860 HK dollars (110.26 U.S. dollars).
Cheung said the settlement was the result of the willingness of both sides to compromise.
"In labor relations, particularly in settlement, we are talking about arriving at a consensus, in the spirit of compromise, in the spirit of partnership and mutual understanding. Everybody comes out as a winner in this particular case," Cheung said.
