Chinese peacekeepers return from Sudan mission |

One hundred and forty-four Chinese peacekeepers returned home on Wednesday after completing their tour of duty in southwest Sudan's Wau region, according to military sources.
They are the first echelon of the 435-member second contingent of Chinese peacekeeping troops to the region. The other 291 members will return on Sep. 28.
The second contingent have repaired roads, treated the sick and trained local doctors and nurses since arriving in Wau in January.
All 435 personnel have received United Nations Peace-keeping Medals.
The first echelon of the third contingent of peacekeepers left home on Monday to replace the second contingent.
China joined the peacekeeping operation in Wau region in May 2006. It is China's longest peacekeeping mission, at an expected six and a half years, since it first joined UN peacekeeping operations.
Chinese military officials announced they would deploy engineers and a medical unit to Sudan's troubled Darfur region next month as part of a UN peacekeeping mission.
