A reception was held in Beijing on Wednesday to celebrate the 10th anniversary of establishment of the China-Cook Islands diplomatic relations.
The two countries forged diplomatic ties on July 25, 1997. Trade volume between the two sides reached two million U.S. dollars in 2006, some ten times over that of 1997.
Addressing the occasion, Li Xiaolin, vice president of the Chinese People's Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries (CPAFFC), said the China-Cook Islands ties have developed smoothly in the past years.
The two countries have maintained various and fruitful exchanges in fields of politics, economy, culture and health, Li said.
The CPAFFC and China-Oceania Friendship Association will continue to make unremitting efforts to promote the friendly exchanges between the two peoples, she said.
Prime Minister of the Cook Islands Jim Marurai appreciated the support and assistance that Chinese government has provided to the Cook Islands. He said the Cook Islands will firmly adhere to the one-China policy.
Chen Haosu, president of CPAFFC, attended the reception and met with Marurai and his party before the reception.
Representatives from South Pacific island countries in China were also present at the reception.
