Taiwan leader Chen Shui-bian announced on Thursday that he would return as the chairman of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), local media reported.
Chen, who had served as its chairman from 2002 to December 2004, told a news conference he had accepted the DPP's invitation to become chairman.
Chen claimed that his responsibility would be to lead the DPP to win the "legislative elections" in January and the "presidential election" in March next year.
He would continue pushing the island's attempts to join the United Nations and the World Health Organization under the name of "Taiwan."
Former DPP chairman Yu Shyi-kun announced his resignation in September this year, days after he was charged with corruption and forgery.
Chen's return to the chairmanship was criticized by media in Taiwan.
One media report said that Chen Shui-bian was not only "a symbol of corruption", but the standard-bearer of "Taiwan secessionists." His return indicated that it was impossible for the DPP to make any reform fueled by inner momentum. Source:Xinhua
