Chinese courts have worked efficiently in the past two years with 98.86 percent of the cases closing in a timely fashion, said Xiao Yang, president of the Supreme People's Court (SPC) of China, Friday.

And 97.17 percent of sentences were implemented within the legal timetable, Xiao said when addressing the session of the National People's Congress (NPC) Standing Committee opening here Wednesday.

Many Chinese courts have adopted a computer network to record and monitor the process of a lawsuit, which contributed a lot to efficiency improvement, he said.

However, he did not reveal figures from previous years, which would demonstrate to what extent the Chinese courts have upped efficiency.

The courts also tightened the punishment handed out to judges for intentional delay, Xiao said.

But the SPC still received complaints of unfair judgment and slow implementation of court orders, he admitted. "It is a long-term task to improve the work of courts and monitoring system on them," he said.

He also promised to decentralize the power among different departments inside the courts.
