Courts from the Chinese mainland and the Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR) signed a third cooperative agreement in Beijing yesterday dealing with civil and commercial cases.

The move further protects the legal rights of those in the two regions and is expected to benefit Macao's long-term stability and economic prosperity under the principle of "one country, two systems".

The agreement was signed by Supreme People's Court Vice-President Huang Songyou and Macao SAR Administration and Justice Secretary Florinda da Rosa Silva Chan.

The arrangement allows for the courts of both sides to mutually recognize civil or commercial arbitral awards concluded according to the respective laws.

Previously, mainland courts could not accept or enforce the arbitral awards from Macao though Macao courts could handle awards from inland.

The arrangement states that all arbitral awards concluded since the handover in Macao in 1999 can be applied for enforcement in the mainland starting January 1 next year.

"This will lay a solid foundation for broader judicial cooperation between mainland and Macao," Huang said.

Chan said Macao's legal system has been strengthened since 1999 and is "very grateful for the tremendous support from the central government in the area".

In 2001 and last year, courts of both sides signed two agreements that encompassed the delivery of judicial documents and collection of evidence in civil and commercial cases.
