China and Sweden yesterday agreed to strengthen cooperation and intensify exchanges in sustainable development and environmentally friendly enterprises.
At a Sino-Swedish Seminar on Sustainable Development in Beijing, Sweden's Deputy Prime Minister Maud Olofsson said she is greatly impressed by the sustainable and fast development of China.
China is now Sweden's most important trade partner in Asia and has 500 Swedish companies.
"I believe the two countries will identify many more aspects of environmental policies and technologies of interests to cooperate in," she said.
The two countries are cooperating in environmental sectors at many levels. Recently, the Swedish government and the Chinese Environmental Protection Administration jointly established a center for environmental technology in Beijing.
The center focuses on areas including urban development, emission reduction, industrial pollution control, energy efficiency, renewable energy, sewage treatment, water supply, air quality monitoring, and waste management.
Sweden's ambassador to China Mikael Lindstrom said the center has a budget of 6 million Swedish kronor ($945,000). It will get three-fourths of its funds from Sweden and the rest will come from China.
