Chinese State Councilor Tang Jiaxuan met here with former U.S. president Jimmy Carter Tuesday afternoon in Beijing, voicing his hope that China and the United States could further boost their constructive and cooperative relations.
"The Sino-American relations have maintained an overall momentum of growth and China is willing to join hands with the U.S. to increase strategic mutual trust and expand cooperation in various fields", Tang told Carter.
He also called on the two sides to settle disputes and the sensitive issues between the two countries, and reinforce the communication and coordination on those significant international and regional issues.
About the Taiwan issue, Tang stressed that Taiwan independence activities promoted by the Taiwan secessionists are the "biggest threat" to peace and stability across the Taiwan Straits.
China and the United States should work together against the secessionist activities of Taiwan independence in any forms in an aim to safeguard the peace and stability across the Taiwan Straits as well as the overall situation of the China-U.S. relations, Tang noted.
Carter reiterated the one-China policy, saying the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and the United States during his administration had significant influence over the two countries, Asia and the world at large.
Cater said he would continue his effort to promote mutual understanding between the two peoples and make contributions to the development of bilateral ties. Source: Xinhua
