Static electricity is thought to have triggered a blast at a Tianjin oil supply depot that injured four people on Thursday, investigators said on Friday.
Officials with the municipal work safety watchdog said their initial investigation cited static as the cause of several fires, which broke out when two trucks were pumping out diesel from a supply tank at the privately-owned gas depot around noon.
The two truck caught fire immediately and a strong shockwave sent the huge tank flying about 100 meters from its pad.
Fortunately, a China National Petroleum Corporation (PetroChina) gas station and two oil houses adjacent to the site were not affected.
Witnesses said one person was badly injured and three others received slight wounds in the accident. Doctors said their injuries were not life-threatening.
A final conclusion on the cause of the accident was yet to be determined.
On Nov. 24, a gas station blast in Shanghai killed four and injured more than 30. An investigation concluded the accident was due to improper maintenance at the station.
