Taiwan share prices surged Wednesday, with the weighted index, the market's key barometer, moving up 206.92 points, or 2.65 percent, to close at 8,014.31, according to news reaching here from Taipei.

The bourse opened at 7,881.01 and fluctuated between 8,020.39 and 7,865.48 during trading. A total of 4.12 billion shares changed hands on a market turnover of 112.02 billion new Taiwan dollars (3.45 billion U.S. dollars).

All eight major stock categories gained ground, with foodstuff issues moving up the most at 4.4 percent, followed by paper and pulp issues at 3.7 percent, construction issues at 3.4 percent, machinery and electronics shares at 3.2 percent, textile stocks at2.3 percent, plastics and chemicals shares and banking and financial shares both at 1.8 percent, and cement stocks at one percent.

Losers outnumbered gainers 386 to 1,000, with 427 stocks closing flat.
