The flag fall for taxi journeys in Hong Kong was set to go up by one HK dollar after the endorsement of a proposal in support of the rise by the Special Administrative Region (SAR) government's transport advisory committee Thursday.
Teresa Cheng, chairman of the committee, said the proposed fare increase was reasonable, given the fact that "taxi drivers have been operating in difficult conditions over the past decade," the local RTHK radio reported.
Cheng said members of the committee had assessed changes in thetaxi industry's revenue and operating costs and the impact of the proposed rise on passengers.
The committee would submit its recommendation for consideration by the chief executive-in-council and the SAR legislative council, she said, adding that members of the committee also backed legislative proposals to implement a package of measures to enhance road safety and in stil good driving practices and behavior in road users.
Hong Kong recorded an increase of 3.4 percent in composite consumer price index for November, showing price pressures especially in food, housing, clothing and transport.
