Lebanese FM meets Chinese envoy

Lebanese foreign minister Fawzi Salloukh on Thursday called for a candid and overall peace in the Middle East and full implementation of the relevant resolutions of the U.N. Security Council.

Meeting China's special envoy on Middle East issues Sun Bigan, Salloukh stressed the need to establish an independent Palestinian state with Jerusalem as its capital and to respect the rights of Palestinian refugees' to return to their homeland.

He expressed appreciation for China's support for Lebanon on many international issues and briefed Sun on his country's current political situation.

Sun said his meeting with Salloukh was "very successful" and expressed the belief that the Lebanese people have the wisdom and capacity to help their country out of the difficult situation.

He said the Annapolis meeting is a new starting point to relaunch the Middle East peace dialogue and hoped that all parties concerned hold negotiations to achieve fair, comprehensive and lasting peace in the Middle East region.

During the visit, Sun also met with Lebanese Army Commander Gen. Michel Suleiman and Parliament majority leader Saad Hariri.

The envoy, who arrived in Beirut on Tuesday after attending a donors conference for the Palestinians on Monday in Paris, will also visit Israel, the Palestinian territory and Syria.
